'Art is a very powerful means of communication.' I have always been concerned with the figure and the space that it occupies. 'Beneath the obvious narrative of the paintings is a story of fairytales, princesses, life, death, happiness and sorrow.' The work is semi-autobiographical, but it's also about every one of us; about our search for belonging and meaning, and our individual isolation in an over populated society. Each painting has its hidden narrative, and whilst painting, thoughts relating to personal development and insights are turned over in my mind. This automatically feeds into each painting. These paintings are not of the everyday conscious world, and though they may initially appear to illustrate aspects of family life, in fact, they suggest a spiritual state of mind, where the reality of the physical is suspended, replaced by an inner tranquillity. Influences Meditation is not only an inspiration but also a lifeline to me. My painting develops as my spirituality develops, and vice versa. One feeds the other. I show contrasts that I am hardly aware of until I dig deeper and spend time with myself. Amongst the many artists who have influenced me are Botticelli, Klimt, Lucien Freud, Paula Rego and Nicky Hoberman. Qualifications & training 2000 BA Fine Art (Hons) Painting, University of York.
